About Us

Independents started informally in 2003 when four independent coffeeshops, Joe Coffee Bar, The Green Line Cafe, InFusion, and Mugshots began sharing information & resources. Recognizing a common "triple bottom line philosophy," as the founding members we realized we could do more to help small farmers and make a positive impact on the environment if we did it together. What began as the sharing of information quickly grew into a collaboration that was more than we ever expected. Since our first official meeting in 2004, members have participated in joint advertising, bulk purchasing, public speaking, educational events, and group trainings. In formalizing the cooperative, we hope to be an agent of change in our communities by encouraging the support of local business and sustainable business practices.

In 2005, we officially incorporated as Independents Coffee Cooperative with financial and organizational assistance from Keystone Development Center. In accordance with our mission to increase the sale of fair trade coffee, support the local economy, and to promote the viability of independent and locally owned coffeehouses, we opened membership to others who share inthese values, and in the concept of the triple bottom line. Our Mission

Currently based in Philadelphia, Independents Coffee Cooperative is a group of independently owned coffeehouses focused on increasing the sale of fair-trade & organic coffee and educating consumers on fair-trade and sustainability issues, while making a positive impact in our communities, on the environment, and in the lives of the people who produce the products we sell.

Beans & Screens

Beans & Screens has been gestating for nine long months and is finally ready to make its debut to the world. The idea for Beans & Screens borrowed heavily (read: was stolen) from the overwhelmingly successful Screens-N-Spokes art show held at Mugshots Coffeehouse in September 2007 and curated by Sam Verrill.

Mugshots makes City Paper's Top 5!

City Paper's Top 5 Vegan Takes on Classic Sandwiches 03/14/08 "A generous heaping of Tempeh bacon makes the Mugshots BLT hog heaven for imitation meatheads. Slices are piled up with the L and T, then smashed between pieces of wholesome seeded bread carrying a thin layer of vegan mayo. The weekend crowds can get crazy, but it's worth the wait."
